PRESS RELEASE: BVIEC ADVANCES MAJOR LIVE-LINE MAINTENANCE ACROSS VIRGIN GORDA

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, August 26, 2026 — The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) has commenced a major maintenance programme on its overhead electricity infrastructure across Virgin Gorda, aimed at strengthening the network and reducing the likelihood of preventable outages.

The works began on Monday, August 24, 2026, and are expected to continue for approximately three to four weeks, with crews moving systematically across the island. Work commenced in The Valley and will progress to North Sound and other communities throughout Virgin Gorda.

A significant portion of the maintenance is being carried out by BVIEC’s specially trained live-line professionals, allowing repairs and replacements to be completed while the electricity system remains energised. This approach is expected to minimise disruptions to customers while critical maintenance is underway.

The programme includes replacing aluminium jumpers with more durable copper jumpers, which are better suited to Virgin Gorda’s coastal environment and exposure to salt-laden air and sea spray. Crews will also replace pins and pin insulators, fuse cutouts, dishes, straps and other infrastructure identified as requiring attention.

Transmission and Distribution Engineer, Mr. Leroy Abraham, said the Corporation decided to prioritise the concentrated maintenance programme after assessing the condition of sections of the overhead network.

“While maintenance will not completely eliminate outages, it will certainly help to minimise those associated with deteriorated infrastructure,” Mr. Abraham said. “This programme allows us to address vulnerable components proactively and strengthen the overall reliability of the system across Virgin Gorda.”

While BVIEC routinely maintains both its underground and overhead networks, this represents one of the more extensive concentrated maintenance exercises undertaken on Virgin Gorda’s overhead infrastructure in recent years.

BVIEC is also urging motorists to exercise caution when approaching Corporation vehicles, equipment and work crews along the roadways. Drivers are asked to reduce speed and remain alert for the safety of employees, pedestrians and other road users.

Where crews are operating along narrow roads, motorists who require access are encouraged to safely make a member of the team aware so that, where possible, arrangements can be made to facilitate the safe passage of vehicles.
