DEPUTY GM MS. SYMORNE PENN FEATURED IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTE FACEBOOK POST

In 2017, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) experienced extreme #hurricanes Irma and Maria, which decimated approximately 90% of the electrical grid and required 6 months of efforts to fully restore. Our partners in the Caribbean are doing critical work to build back better. Learn about their work in our latest islands changemakers spotlight!

Symorne Penn, Deputy General Manager at BVI Electricity Corporation (Official), shares that the BVI are working toward energy resilience by collectively transitioning “from centralized energy production to a distributive generation model which would strengthen our ability to withstand or recover quickly from disruptions in energy production and distribution.

The BVI Electricity Corporation is working towards achieving energy resilience through progressing utility-scale renewable energy and battery storage projects in Pockwood Pond, Paraquita Bay and on the island of Anegada that would introduce the diversification needed in our energy resources from our sole dependence on fossil fuel and the ability to segment the grid into micro-grids if need be.”
