PLANT OPERATOR (Tortola)

The BVI Electricity Corporation (“BVIEC”) is seeking a vibrant, skilled and safety-focused individual to fill the position of PLANT OPERATOR, GENERATION DEPARTMENT.  This individual will play a key role in operating and monitoring power generation equipment to ensure the continuous and efficient delivery of electricity.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS:
    • A minimum of a High School Diploma.
  2. EXPERIENCE:
    • At least 2-3 years working experience in an office environment.
  3. SALARY:
    • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  4. PRIMARY DUTIES:
    • Assist with the switching of the high and low-voltage electrical circuits, and the synchronizing and taking load off generators.
    • Monitor gauges on control panel and main electrical switch board in the Control Room.
    • Record readings on log sheets and refills radiators with water hourly.
    • Ensure standby engines are working in the event of a power failure.
    • Frequent checks oil pressure, temperature gauges, for water and oil leaks, fan belts, batteries and for any abnormalities that would indicate an electrical or engine fault and record and report any defects promptly to the Shift Controller on duty.
    • Fill fuel day tanks from storage tank ensuring the utmost care and attention is paid in the performance of this duty.
    • Clean oil spills from under the engines to ensure it does not become a fire hazard.
    • Inform the Shift Controller of inability to generate adequate electricity.
    • Assist in the restoration of power.
    • Assist with the monitoring and recording of operating conditions of all generators, auxiliary equipment around the power station.
    • Accurate record and report all generator downtime.
    • Maintains a good working relationship with all employees of the Corporation.
  5. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND COMPETENCIES:
    • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities;
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with administrative tools or software;
    • Technical qualifications would be an asset;
    • Team-oriented individual;
    • Attention to detail;
    • Strong commitment to safety and reliability are essential.
