ANEGADA TO BECOME THE FIRST ISLAND IN THE BVI WITH LARGESCALE RENEWABLE ENERGY

Plans are being put in place to make Anegada the first island in the British Virgin Islands with large-scale renewable energy.

This is according to the General Manager of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) Leroy Abraham who told BVI News the initiative is expected to get started in the near future.

“We are trying to create a microgrid on Anegada so Anegada could potentially be one of the first islands with large scale renewable energy on it. We are about to release a request for proposal next week (this week) internationally for a microgrid. [This microgrid will] include solar PV (Photovoltaic) and battery storage for Anegada,” Abraham stated.

He also said the microgrid will assist with reducing the number of resources needed to run the energy plant on Anegada, which is the only island in the BVI that generates its own electricity.

“The solar PV storage facility will essentially be a compliment to the traditional diesel fuel which generates energy production on the island and essentially makes things much more reliable and efficient on the island,” the BVIEC boss stated.

“Because it’s not connected to the grid, this is the sole means of energy production on the island and it also is very difficult in terms of the whole logistics, in terms of getting fuel here for energy production without them being connected to the parent grid,” Abraham added.

He further said that residents of Anegada can look forward to seeing the other initiatives being undertaken on the sister island.
