BVIEC STRENGTHENS SAFETY CULTURE WITH LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITY TRAINING
Tortola, British Virgin Islands, May 30, 2025 — The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) proudly hosted a dynamic Leadership Training on Safety Accountability and Leadership on Thursday, May 29, reinforcing its unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of safety across all levels of the organisation.
The session, held exclusively for BVIEC’s senior team members, was expertly facilitated by Melony James, BVIEC’s Occupational Health and Safety Manager. Designed to equip leaders with the necessary tools, mindset, and strategies to embed safety as a foundational value, the training was both timely and impactful.
Among the key topics discussed were the distinctions between responsibility and accountability, as well as the moral obligations leaders have in ensuring workplace safety. Attendees explored the vital role of leadership in safety culture creation, the ethical and moral dimensions of safety, and how these elements directly influence the organisation and its customers. Emphasis was also placed on the critical responsibilities of team leaders in shaping a proactive safety environment.
A highlight of the training was the in-depth discussion on the Four-Step Management Method — Plan, Do, Check, Act — a globally recognised framework for continuous improvement in safety and operational practices.
Senior management representatives from all departments were in attendance, including Corporate Services; People, Culture & Talent Services; Transmission & Distribution; Information Technology (IT); Generation and Finance. Their unified presence demonstrated a shared commitment to enhancing leadership capabilities and advancing BVIEC’s safety objectives.
Melony James, the session’s host and spearhead of the initiative, remarked:
“Leadership sets the tone for safety across the organisation. This training was about helping our leaders understand that safety is not just a checklist—it’s a value-driven commitment that impacts every employee and customer we serve. Empowered leaders create safer, stronger teams.”
BVIEC continues to invest in strategic development initiatives that position safety at the heart of its operations, ensuring a secure environment for both employees and customers.
