PRESS STATEMENT: BVIEC WARNS AGAINST THREATS, INTIMIDATION AND UNSAFE METER ACCESS

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, September 17, 2026 — The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is urging members of the public to respect and cooperate with authorised employees and to ensure that Corporation-owned meters and other electrical equipment on their properties are safely and easily accessible.

The appeal follows recent incidents in which BVIEC employees conducting authorised meter replacements were threatened with serious physical violence while carrying out their duties. The Corporation views threats, intimidation and aggressive behaviour towards its employees with grave concern.

BVIEC employees routinely work throughout the Territory to inspect, read, maintain, repair and replace equipment necessary for the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. In many cases, these duties require access to equipment located on private premises.

Customers are therefore asked to ensure that access to electricity meters and other BVIEC equipment is not obstructed. Areas surrounding meters should be kept clear and safe for employees to approach and work. Unsecured animals, locked or inaccessible areas, overgrown vegetation, stored items, vehicles or other hazards should not prevent or compromise safe access to Corporation equipment.

The Corporation also reminds customers that BVIEC’s By-Laws and Ordinance provide authorised employees with rights of access when carrying out legitimate Corporation duties. Under Section 15 of the BVIEC By-Laws, consumers are required to provide duly appointed employees or representatives access to premises between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. when necessary, and at all times during an emergency, including for inspecting or reading meters and other purposes connected with the supply of electricity.

Additionally, Section 27 of the BVIEC Ordinance provides for authorised access at reasonable times in connection with Corporation equipment and infrastructure, while Section 28 establishes that BVIEC-owned lines, meters, fittings, works and apparatus lawfully installed on a property remain the property of the Corporation.

Customers who have concerns about an employee requesting access are encouraged to ask for identification or contact BVIEC to verify the employee’s authorisation.

BVIEC asks all customers to cooperate respectfully with employees and to maintain safe, clear and unobstructed access to Corporation equipment.
