PRESS RELEASE: 2025 CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo

The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is proud to announce that the British Virgin Islands will host the 2025 CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium, and Field Safety Training from April 25–27.

This marks the first time the BVI has been selected to host this prestigious annual event, which brings together skilled lineworkers from CARILEC’s 33 member utilities across  he Caribbean.

The annual CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium, and Field Safety Training highlights the expertise and safe working practices of lineworkers, who play a critical role in ensuring reliable electricity transmission to homes, businesses, and communities. The event is designed to empower lineworkers through a combination of training sessions and competitive activities that emphasize teamwork, safe work practices, and regional collaboration.

This year’s Rodeo will follow Lineworker Appreciation Day, observed on April 18—an occasion to honour the men and women who often work in hazardous conditions to keep our power systems running. In line with CARILEC’s mission, the Rodeo and its complementary Lineworkers Certification program also help prepare participants for deployment under CARILEC’s Disaster Assistance Programme, where they support Caribbean territories impacted by natural disasters.

“We are extremely proud to welcome our partner CARILEC and its participating member utilities to the British Virgin Islands,” Dr. Neil Smith, General Manager of BVIEC, stated.
“Hosting the 2025 Lineworkers Rodeo, Symposium, and Field Safety Training is not only a historic moment for the BVI, but also a testament to our commitment to excellence in the energy sector. Our lineworkers are the backbone of our power infrastructure, and this event underscores the importance of safety and skill development for all who work to keep the lights on across the region,” he added.

Meanwhile, Melony James, Occupational Health and Safety Manager, reemphasized the importance of safety, stating: “Safety remains our top priority and is at the heart of everything we do at the BVIEC. We are dedicated to fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration among our team members and those across the Caribbean. The Rodeo and Symposium provide an invaluable opportunity for lineworkers to practice safe work methods, engage in hands-on training, and exchange best practices with their peers.”

James also encouraged the BVI public to come out and support the BVIEC team as they compete in the Lineworkers Rodeo with an opportunity to win the event for a third consecutive year.

“Your presence will be a powerful show of support for the hardworking lineworkers who play a critical role in keeping our communities powered and safe. The energy and encouragement of the crowd can make all the difference as they demonstrate their skills, speed and teamwork in this thrilling competition,” James stated.
