BVIEC DEPLOYS SECOND TEAM TO JAMAICA WITH SUPPORT FROM INTERCARIBBEAN

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, March 11, 2026 — The British Virgin Islands Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), with the continued support of InterCaribbean Airways, has deployed a second six-member technical team to Jamaica to assist with ongoing power restoration efforts following the catastrophic damage caused by Hurricane Melissa in late October 2025.
The team, drawn from BVIEC’s Transmission and Distribution Department, departed the Territory on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and is expected to spend approximately three weeks on the ground supporting restoration activities.
This latest deployment continues BVIEC’s commitment to regional cooperation and mutual support among Caribbean utilities. The team will assist with rebuilding critical electrical infrastructure and supporting Jamaica’s ongoing recovery efforts as communities continue to recover from the extensive damage caused by the storm.
The deployment was made possible with the continued and tremendous support of InterCaribbean Airways, which once again assisted BVIEC by waiving fees associated with the transportation of essential tools and equipment required for the mission. The airline also provided key support during BVIEC’s first deployment to Jamaica in November 2025 and has facilitated numerous other deployments in the past.
BVIEC’s first cohort of six technical personnel departed the Territory on November 2, 2025, and returned on December 3, 2025. During that assignment, the team worked extensively to rebuild damaged power lines, replace light poles, and plant new poles to restore electricity service in affected areas. The first week of operations took place in Montego Bay, with the remaining three weeks focused in Negril, where the damage was particularly severe.
General Manager Dr. Neil Smith expressed appreciation for the continued partnership that has made these efforts possible.
“BVIEC is committed to contributing to regional restoration efforts whenever circumstances allow us to provide support. The recovery process following major storms often requires collaboration across the region, and we are proud to once again contribute technical support to assist with Jamaica’s restoration efforts. We also extend sincere appreciation to InterCaribbean Airways for their continued partnership and assistance in facilitating these important missions.”
BVIEC remains committed to supporting regional resilience initiatives while continuing to deliver reliable electricity services to the people of the Virgin Islands.
