BVIEC’S “WATTS GOING ON!” WEEK ENGAGES NEARLY 200 STUDENTS

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, November 17, 2025 — The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) successfully concluded its inaugural Week of Activities, BVIEC Presents: Watts Going On!, held from November 10–14, welcoming approximately 200 students from schools across the Territory to guided tours at the Anegada Power Station and the Henry Wilfred Smith Power Station in Pockwood Pond, Tortola.

Throughout the week, students and teachers representing a wide range of institutions including Claudia Creque Educational Centre, BVI Seventh Day Adventist School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Agape Total Life Academy, Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), Cedar International School, Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, were given an up-close and engaging look at how electricity is generated and distributed throughout the Virgin Islands.

For many schools, the visit served as the perfect complement to their science curriculum. In fact, students from ESHS were particularly engaged, as they are currently studying the topic of electricity this term. Their teachers noted that the hands-on learning experience reinforced key concepts covered in the classroom.

Teachers and students alike shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, describing the tours as eye-opening, educational, and highly engaging. Several students expressed that seeing the engines, control systems and safety processes firsthand helped them better understand the practical side of what they normally learn only in textbooks.

The most common takeaway shared among participants was a greater appreciation for the hard work, expertise, and coordination required to produce electricity across the Territory. Many also expressed that they would now approach future outages with more patience and understanding, having learned how complex and delicate the power generation process can be.

BVIEC’s Public Relations & Marketing Media Manager, Mr. Kamal Haynes, shared the following comments on the success of the initiative:

“This week has been truly inspiring for the students, the teachers and for all of us at BVIEC. Opening our power stations to the Territory’s young learners allowed us to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. The curiosity, excitement, and thoughtful questions from the students reminded us why initiatives like this are so important.”

“We are extremely proud of the positive impact this experience has had, especially for students currently studying electricity in their science classes. Their teachers shared how valuable it was for them to connect what they’re learning with what they witnessed firsthand. Our hope is that this not only deepens their understanding but also sparks interest in the many career opportunities within the Corporation.”

BVIEC Acknowledges Staff and Partners

BVIEC extends its heartfelt appreciation to the many staff members who contributed to the success of the week-long activity, including team members from Corporate Services, Finance, Information Technology, Transmission & Distribution and People, Culture & Talent Services (PCTS).

A special acknowledgement goes to the dedicated tour guides from the Generation Department who led the sessions with professionalism and enthusiasm, including Ivan Smith, Jerry Jones, Leslie Allen Jr., Neal Jackson, Shawn Smith, and Daniel Vanterpool. Their expertise and commitment ensured that every student and teacher had an informative and memorable experience.

BVIEC also expresses deep appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, and especially Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Orlandette Crabbe, for their continued collaboration in coordinating school participation and supporting this educational initiative.
